Our client operated an arable farm on which there were a number of outbuildings, including modern but structurally unsound storage buildings. Inside the footprint of one of the buildings, a former grain store, he sought to build a holiday cottage.
Initially the planners were reluctant to accept such a proposition and Prism were called in to help out. On his behalf we commissioned an economic impact study that looked at what such a proposal might contribute to the local economy, as well as reviewing the local tourism strategy.
Eventually we persuaded the planners to support the proposals but the case was far from straightforward. It highlights the gulf that sometimes exist between where the government expect the planning system to be in terms of supporting the rural economy and where some planners still wish it was!
