The growth at Mainsgill Farm Shop & Tea rooms – which is renowned for its humorous straw bale sculptures visible from the A66 – has allowed for a significant expansion of the shop and café originally established as a form of farm diversification in 1999.
A sensitively designed scheme was prepared that retained the character and appearance of the existing farm shop and butchers, ensuring the overall development has the feel of a group of traditional agricultural buildings. Through a Planning Statement prepared by Prism Planning it was argued that the extensions are of a design and scale appropriate to a location on a farm in the open countryside.
Council Officers recommended refusal of the application; but Prism Planning advised of tactics for the applications committee hearing, and Members of the Planning Committee voted unanimously to grant the expansion permission.
